C R E W   R A N K S   &   S H I P   J O B S   —

Within the ship's hierarchy, there were several departments: Command (CMD), Operations (OPR), Sciences (SCI) and Security (SEC). Characters were able to sign up for a place within one of them, at which point the acronym for that department appeared on their arm as part of their crew number tattoo. Though the tattoos are now corrupted and show no designation, departmental access remains when venturing through the ship. Due to the nature of the nanite tattoos, characters could only officially work within one department. All crew positions were as follows: C O M M A N D   C R E W — CMD ◆ CAPTAIN — Primary command. Everyone answers to the captain; no exceptions. He or she makes the executive decisions regarding shipwide persons (both crew and passengers), military operations, and inter-ship interactions. ( This position is filled by Captain Ward. ) ◆ COMMANDER — "Commander" is mostly an unofficial title for the second-in-command of the ship. The commander takes over for the captain if, for some reason, he becomes unable to perform his duties. Although this role usually goes to a bridge resident rather than a medical or engineering officer, Resnik is the commander of the Tranquility simply by virtue of seniority. ( This position is filled by Commander Resnik. ) ◆ PILOT — Drives the ship. "Drives" is a slightly misleading word, especially with a ship of the Tranquility's size; the primary objective here is to plot coordinates, paths, and chart routes; each must be 100% accurate. The pilot must have a vast knowledge of physics, mathematics, astronomy, and the "maps" of the known universe. ( This position is restricted. ) O P E R A T I O N S — OPR ◆ COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER(S) — The communications officer is in charge of sending and receiving all messages, whether inter or intra-ship. They observe and maintain the ship's network, monitors activity, and relays comms to specific officers; they also report whether signals have been lost or muddled, and essentially make sure that all relevant lines of communication are open and functioning properly. Their jobs include: ensuring everything is primed and ready when preparing for a jump, fuel usage, checking all systems when the ship is on alert or using battle stations, the environmental systems of the ship (ventilation, electricity, heat, water, gravity, electronics, etc.), looking after the status of the ship's systems, the health and status of the power plant, plant fuel, and power distribution grid. Failure to properly monitor these systems or failure of the systems themselves will result in chip and passenger death within hours. ( The position of Chief Engineering Officer is filled by Rikku.
